Directions to our visitor center by car

For visitors driving from Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument, or Northern New Mexico, the easiest approach to Los Alamos is via NM-502. NM-502 leads into Los Alamos from the east.

As you drive into Los Alamos, you can find the Los Alamos Visitor Center at 475 20th Street, in between Trinity Dr and Central Ave. Plenty of parking surrounds Ashley Pond.

For a more scenic route from Albuquerque and other locations further west, taking US-550 to NM-4 E offers beautiful views and the chance to drive through Valles Caldera National Preserve. Taking this route from Albuquerque takes a little longer than driving through Santa Fe, but is about 10 miles (16 km) shorter. The approach from the west can be windy, winding, and mountainous. For those traveling by RV, entering Los Alamos from the east is recommended.

For visitors approaching Los Alamos from the west, it may make sense to take NM-4 E to NM-501, which leads into town. However, this route requires an identity check as it crosses through Los Alamos National Laboratory Property. Be prepared to show your identification at the checkpoints. The approach from the west can be windy, winding, and mountainous. For those traveling by RV, entering Los Alamos from the east is recommended. By following NM-4 E past the NM-501 juncture, you can connect with NM-502 and approach Los Alamos from the east.
