The remote location of Hanford in eastern Washington State was chosen by Manhattan Project administrators for one purpose- to build and operate top-secret plutonium production facilities for use in the world’s first atomic bombs. At its peak, tens of thousands of workers from nearby communities contributed to this massive undertaking.
