The visitor center building obtained a Gold level certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of the sustainability features include:
Solar panels on the roof that provide about 10 percent of the power required by the building.
A light shaft in the roof, similar to a sun roof, that lets in natural light.
Rainwater harvesting system on the roof, that provides water used to flush toilets in the facility’s restrooms.
95 percent of the materials from the previous buildings that the visitor center replaced were recycled rather than being sent to a landfill.
