Artist in Residence Application

Artist-in-Residence applications are now open for the 2026 visitor season (May-October 2026)!

Applications will close on February 13, 2026.

About the Program

The Artist-in-Residence Program at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park aims to help visitors connect with the landscape through art and the artistic process.

Unlike some programs, we do not expect a finished work of art for the park collection. Instead, we emphasize engagement, and selected artists are expected to contribute a minimum of 100 hours on-site during their residency through outreach, interaction, and creative presence. Selected artists will receive a $2,500 stipend to support their residency.

How to Apply

  1. Access the application form: 2026 Artist-in-Residence Application Form
  2. Submit your completed application by February 13, 2026 11:59 p.m. EST.
  3. Include the following supplemental materials as instructed in the form:
    • A Letter of Interest
    • A Digital Portfolio showcasing your work

Tip: We recommend drafting your responses in a separate document before uploading, as the application for does not allow saving progress.

Horse Shed Art Studio

The Artist-in-Residence studio is located at the Horse Shed, just above the Belvedere summer house in the Horse Shed Meadow. The Horse Shed, designed by Theodor Muller and built in 1961, was originally constructed to house Mary Rockefeller's horses. The artist studio, in the rehabilitated Rockefeller Horse Shed, is off the grid with a 230 watt solar photovoltaic system. The renovation of this building was designed by SAS Architects of Burlington, Vermont, the same firm who designed the Forest Center, the park's Platinum LEED certified classroom and meeting space.

Note: Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller provides studio space for the current artist-in-residence to work in. We are only able to accept applications from local candidates, or from canditates that are able to provide their own housing.
