America the Beautiful Quarter Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP (US Mint)

The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park Quarter was commissioned as part of the America the Beautiful Quarter series to represent the state of Vermont. The reverse (tails) design depicts a young child completing the planting of a Norway spruce seedling near an established tree, continuing the life cycle of the forest. The child represents the conservationist, seeking to maintain a sustainable forest for future enjoyment and education.

For a limited time, rolls of quarters will be available at People’s United Bank in Woodstock, VT and White River Junction, VT. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller quarters, and other quarters that are part of the America the Beautiful Quarter Series can also be purchased on the US Mint Website.

With this activity guide, you have all that you need to become a Junior Ranger Community Changer. This guide will teach you about key themes that are highlighted on the new 2020 quarter that features the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Vermont.

Every year, the U.S. Mint makes billions of coins – like the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. In 2010, the Mint began issuing the quarters in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Each design features a national park or site in each state, territory, and the District of Columbia. In 2020, the Mint worked with the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Vermont to launch a new quarter design. The coin’s theme is sustainability. Sustainability means working with the environment and our communities so that they both are healthy, now and in the future.

To celebrate the release of the new quarter, the park partnered with the Vermont Wood Works Council to hold a design competition for a vessel that was to be featured in a release event and was the highlight of a small coin pour ceremony at the park. The winner of the competition, Jesse Dunn of Birdseye, was inspired by ideas from his children in a conversation around the kitchen table. His winning design features a large wooden acorn made from wood harvested from park’s Mount Tom Forest and Shelburne Farms, a partner in park educational programs and a National Historic Landmark in Vermont. The vessel is a highlight in a short video filmed at the park and in the Birdseye workshops that celebrates the coin’s release with area youth.
