From San Antonio, take Highway 281 north. From Fredericksburg, take Highway 290 east. By car to the LBJ Ranch and LBJ State Park and Historic Site: From Johnson City, take Highway 290 fourteen miles west to the LBJ State Park. From Fredericksburg, take Highway 290 sixteen miles east to the LBJ State Park. The nearest major airports are in Austin and San Antonio. Overall, the park enjoys a sunny, mild climate during three seasons of the year. Spring: Temperatures range from 45 F to 85 F (7 C/29 C). Rain is common in April and May. Summer: Temperatures range from 70 F to 95 F (21 C/35 C). Temperatures can exceed 100 F (38 C) in July and August. Lightweight clothing and sunscreen are advisable. Be prepared with plenty of water. Fall: Temperatures range from 45 F to 85 F (7 C/29 C). Winter: Temperatures range from 35 F to 65 F (2 C/18 C) . Snow and ice are rare.
There are no entrance fees to enter either Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park or Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site.
Visitors DO NEED to pick up a FREE driving permit before entering the LBJ Ranch. These permits are issued at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site visitor center. The State Park visitor center is located on Highway 290 halfway between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. Entrance Fee-free This site is fee-free year-round. No entrance fee or pass is required. Visitor Center and Park HeadquartersPark staff are available to answer questions and help plan your visit. Maps of the Johnson City district and LBJ Ranch district are available. The visitor center features exhibits on President Johnson's life and his legislative accomplishments as president. There are four films that can be viewed upon request. Two 30-minute films: "LBJ: The President" covers his presidential years and "Lady Bird" highlights her life and accomplishments. Two 15-minute films: "Park Orientation" and "Our Heart's Home." Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site Visitor CenterThe state park encompasses more than 700 acres. Staff at the visitor center provide information and answer questions about the state park and the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm. Maps and free permits are issued here for driving tours of the nearby LBJ Ranch. A 30-minute, historic film on President Johnson at his Ranch shows on demand. A gift shop offers local souvenirs. Exhibits and displays on Texas pioneer life, the Hill Country and President Johnson are located in the nearby Exhibit Hall. Hangar Visitor CenterThe Hangar Visitor Center is closed while the park is in the middle of a major rehabilitation of the Texas White House and the Hangar. The Texas White House Complex is closed and not available for viewing. Visitors are welcome to drive the ranch loop and are encouraged to stop at the other sites including the Junction School, Johnson Family Cemetery, Reconstructed Birthplace, and Showbarn. Portable toilets are available at the Reconstructed Birthplace. Public WiFi is available.
Johnson City District: Free wifi at the park visitor center. The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce offers free wifi at their visitor information center in the Withers & Spauldings building. Ranch District: Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, starting point for LBJ Ranch tours, has public wifi in their visitor center. Cellular Access: Depending on your provider, you may find limited cell service in some locations of the park, particularly at the LBJ Ranch due to its rural nature. |
