Geology Rocks! - Activities

What is Geoheritage?

Geoheritage combines two words, geology and heritage. Geology is about rocks on Earth and how they change over time. Heritage is about things we care about. In this case, the thing we care about is the geology of the Keweenaw Peninsula. In this lesson we will look at the rock cycle. This will help us understand how rocks are made and change over time.

Why is the Keweenaw's geoheritage important?

  1. Some of the largest and oldest lava flows in the world are on the Keweenaw Peninsula. They help us understand how this place formed over millions of years. Some of these lava flows also contain copper.
  2. People had been mining copper here for thousands of years. Native Americans were the first miners and used it for making tools and jewlery. Today we use copper more than ever for things like tablets and spaceships!
  3. Geoheritage helps us understand how the land and rocks affect our lives everyday.
