National Park Service Museum Program

The National Park Service manages one of the world's largest museum systems, with museum and archival collections located in in over 390 parks and centers throughout the US.

Museum Handbooks (Part I, II, III)

Museum Handbooks provide information on all issues pertaining to museum collections. Some of it is NPS-specific, but much of the information can be used for any museum or historic site.

  • Museum Handbooks - Part 1

    • Part I contains general information about NPS museum collections, ideal storage and environmental conditions, handling and packing, fire protection, housekeeping and health.

  • Museum Handbooks - Part 2

    • Part II contains information about museum recordkeeping, including accessioning, cataloging, deaccessioning, and loans.

  • Museum Handbooks - Part 3

    • Part III contains information about legal issues, reproductions, and using museum collections in exhibits.

Conserve O Grams

Conserve-o-Grams are short leaflets published in loose-leaf format that provide information on specific topics, such as caring for photographs, creating storage mounts for various material types, different cleaning procedures, and identifying insect damage.

NPS LIBRIS: NPS Library Resource Information Service

The NPS library database is available to view through NPS Libris. Heritage site partners may borrow books from the Keweenaw NHP library. While performing a Simple Search, limit your search location to "KEWE".

Museum and Archival Associations

American Alliance of Museums

The American Alliance of Museums is the only organization representing the entire museum field, from art and history museums to science centers and zoos. There are both individual and institutional memberships available.

Michigan Museums Association

The Michigan Museums Association provides information, advocacy and collaboration for statewide museums and historic sites.

Michigan Archival Association

Michigan Archival Association supports the community of organizations and individuals who care for the state’s materials of cultural heritage and the documentary record through communication and education, and seeks to foster a collaborative and inclusive professional network
