Volunteer

Volunteering at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a great way to help support your park and preserve the historic and natural treasures of the National Park Service. A variety of activities that are vital to the operation of Kennesaw Mountain are performed by volunteers. As a volunteer, you can do anything from greeting visitors at the visitor center, to clearing trails, to assisting in historic demonstrations.

Volunteering is an American tradition that has made immeasurable contributions to communities, organizations, and individuals throughout the country. Every year, thousands of individuals contribute their enthusiasm and skills to help the National Park Service preserve and protect our shared natural and cultural resources and to serve and educate visitors.

Individuals, families, and organized groups are welcome to volunteer. Opportunities are available both for highly skilled professionals and for beginners with little or no experience. The time commitment for volunteer work varies from one-day projects to continuous work extending over months. Drop-in events are also held throughout the year to celebrate special events or national days of service.

People of all ages can volunteer! Those under the age of 18 must submit a parental approval form.

Individual Opportunities

Volunteering at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a great way to help support your park and preserve the historic and natural treasures of the National Park Service. A variety of activities that are vital to the successful operation of the park are performed by volunteers.

The park offers several opportunities for individual volunteering that range from greeting visitors to assisting with trail maintenance to performing living history demonstrations -- there's something for everyone!

Group Opportunities

For a single day of service, groups can sign up for one of our scheduled Service Days or plan a day for members to work on a special service project. Our group service projects include trail maintenance, picnic table beautification, and earthwork beautification.

To plan a service project, please call 770-615-1801 or email us with the following information:

• The name of your organization
• Number of volunteers
• Preferred service day(s)
• Which activity you would like to do

Service Days

Service days are one-day volunteer events perfect for individuals and groups who want to explore new ways to volunteer, need service hours, or cannot volunteer often. However you choose to get involved, you will make a difference!

The park's annual service days include the American Battlefield Trust's Park Day in the spring and the National Environmental Education Foundation's National Public Lands Day in the fall. 

Additionally, the park hosts a monthly trail workday in partnership with the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club. This workday is designed to assist park staff with the maintenance of over 22 miles of hiking trails. Workdays are held on the second Saturday of each month. Times and locations for workdays may vary. For specific details for each workday, please visit the Friends of Kennesaw Mountain website or email us.

All volunteers participating in a monthly workday should bring:

• Clothes appropriate for the weather
• Clothes that can be soiled with paint and/or dirt.
• Closed-toed shoes.
• A water bottle to stay hydrated.
• A hot, sunscreen, and bug spray, are recommended.

Work gloves will be provided along with any necessary tools or supplies. Projects may be cancelled due to thunderstorms, lightning, and other weather extremes.

Eagle Scouts

Scouts who want to complete an Eagle Scout project at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park can email us with the following information:

• Name
• Troop Number
• Scout Leader's name
• Project description
• Proposed dates

The park encourages scouts to visit the battlefield and come up with their own unique project proposals. Possible projects include:

• Trail maintenance
• Maintenance of military unit signs
• Historic fence repair/construction
• Butterfly Garden maintenance
• Adopt-an-Earthwork maintenance

Court-Ordered Community Service

Individuals who are at least 18 years old and have not been convicted of crimes involving violence, the use of weapons, or theft may perform their court-ordered community service at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

Volunteer Recognition

• The President’s Volunteer Service Award: Volunteering at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park also qualifies volunteers for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is administered by Points of Light. Hours are measured over a 12-month period and awards are designated based on cumulative hours. The awards are offered in multiple levels and are designed to recognize each milestone of your service achievement. Levels include bronze, silver, gold and the highest honor, the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for those who contribute more than 4,000 hours of service in their lifetime. • America the Beautiful Volunteer Pass to National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands: Volunteers who donate 250 hours on a cumulative basis are eligible for a free one-year pass to national parks and federal recreation sites which charge an entrance or user fee. The pass admits the pass holder and passengers at per-vehicle fee areas or admits the pass holder plus three other adults at per-person fee areas (children 15 and under are admitted free). A volunteer is eligible to receive a new pass each time they donate 250 cumulative hours, however the pass is issued only in the volunteer's name.
