Safety

We hope you have a wonderful and safe visit to Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. Please adhere to the following safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of yourself, others, and the park's environment.

Emergencies

In case of emergencies, dial 9-1-1 immediately. Provide your location clearly and accurately to the 9-1-1 operator:
  • Plains High School: 300 North Bond Street
  • Plains Depot: 100 West Main Street
  • Boyhood Farm: 402 Old Plains Highway
For park-related emergencies, please contact a park ranger or volunteer. You can reach the Plains High School visitor desk at 229-824-4104 ext. 0 daily between 9 am and 5 pm.

Weather Precautions

The weather in South Georgia can be unpredictable. Prepare for varying conditions by checking the weather forecast before your visit. Be cautious of severe thunderstorms with high afternoon temperatures. If lightning is present, move indoors for safety. While rare, snow can occur in winter months with lower temperatures.

Heat Safety

During summer, temperatures can reach triple digits. Protect yourself and others by taking these precautions:
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly.
  • Wear lightweight and breathable clothing.
  • Use sunscreen and wear a hat to prevent sunburn.
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Wildlife Caution

Our park is home to various wildlife species. To ensure your safety and the well-being of the animals, follow these guidelines:
  • Be cautious and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Stay on designated paths and trails to minimize encounters.
  • Do not feed animals.
  • Watch for spiders, ticks, bees, and fire ants; take precautions to avoid bites and stings.
  • Stay clear of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous.
  • Be aware of venomous snakes in the area. If you encounter a snake, maintain a safe distance and do not provoke it. Report snake sightings to park authorities.
  • Respect all animals' space and avoid approaching them.

Wildlife Protection

Under Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) Title 36/Chapter – 1/ Part 2.2 Wildlife Protection
(a)The following are prohibited:
(1) The taking of wildlife, except by authorized hunting and trapping activities conducted in accordance with paragraph (b) of this section.
(2) The feeding, touching, teasing, frightening or intentional disturbing of wildlife nesting, breeding or other activities.
(3) Possessing unlawfully taken wildlife or portions thereof.

Local Pets

Due to our location in a farming area, you may encounter local pets (dogs and cats) on the Boyhood Farm.
