WalkingThe majority of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park can be reached by walking. Plains Depot and Plains High School are less than ½ mile (.8 km) from each other. Sidewalks connect the streets in downtown Plains. The use of the crosswalks is strongly encouraged when crossing U.S. Highway 280. Please respect the privacy of the citizens of Plains and stay on the sidewalks.BikingPlains, Georgia, is a small town that can be easily explored by bicycle. When exploring Plains, please observe the rules of the road and the privacy of the residents. Plains, Georgia, is bisected by U.S. Highway 280 and has heavy vehicle traffic.Use designated bike lanes and be aware that large logging trucks and agricultural equipment will be sharing the road with you. Traveling to the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm is accomplished by traveling U.S. Highway 280 and the Old Plains Highway. Old Plains Highway has no bike lanes or shoulders, so be mindful of traffic. There is one large hill on Old Plains Highway with a loss and gain in elevation of 35 ft (10.7 m). When exploring the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm, remember that bicycles are not allowed to be ridden on the sidewalks nor allowed inside the buildings. Bicycles may be left at the comfort station. E-bikes are allowed to be ridden anywhere that traditional bikes are allowed to be ridden in the park. Taxis, Uber, and Lyft do not operate in Plains. The closest town that has these options is Americus, Georgia, 12 miles (19.3 km) away.ParkingThe Jimmy Carter National Historical Park has free parking at Plains High School, Plains Depot, and the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm. Parking for large vehicles and RVs is available at all the locations, however parking at Plains Depot is limited. Downtown Plains has visitor parking spots, however, parking for large vehicles such as buses and RVs is limited. There is no overnight parking allowed at any of the locations of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. |
