Maslow Before Bloom

Local students have the opportunity to participate in a unique program with Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, where they can learn about social-emotional wellness and discover practical strategies for managing their emotions. At the end of the program, each school establishes a student community garden, serving as a visual reminder to care for oneself and others, just like tending to a garden.

In partnership with the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers (RCI) and Friends of Jimmy Carter NHP, Jimmy Carter NHP received a grant from the National Park Foundation to support the social and emotional needs of fourth-grade students from local Title I schools. The three-day program, "They Need Maslow Before They Bloom," helps students identify their emotions and equips them with strategies for managing overwhelming feelings. The program's name combines Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Bloom’s Taxonomy—two educational concepts used daily in classrooms.

Throughout the program, students also learn about Rosalynn Carter’s life and her advocacy for mental health during her time as First Lady.
