Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 100 years old. Following a nine day state funeral, he will be laid to rest on Thursday, January 9th, at the Carter Home and Garden, part of Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. The nine days of events honoring President Carter begin on January 4, with a procession through his hometown of Plans to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, where he will lie in repose until January 7th. After traveling to the nation’s capital, the president will lie in state in the United States Capitol until January 9th. For the national day of mourning on January 9, a National Funeral Service will be held at Washington National Cathedral. Following the conclusion of the funeral, President Carter will return to Plains for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church and interment at the Carter Home and Garden. Few U.S. Presidents have maintained such close ties with their hometown as did Jimmy Carter with Plains, Georgia. The rural southern culture of Plains, which revolves around farming, church, and school, exerted a powerful influence in Jimmy Carter’s life — molding the character and shaping the political policies of the 39th president of the United States. At the conclusion of his presidential term in 1981, he and Mrs. Carter returned to Plains where they continued to work as humanitarians with the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity. President Carter also participated in Middle East peace negotiations and authored several books.
