Multi-Park Celebration of Archeology Day to be Held at Homestead National Monument of America

Come see what archeologists are learning about effects of the Homestead Act in the northern Plains. Three National Park Service units - the Midwest Archeological Center, Homestead National Monument of America, and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site - are proud to partner in celebration of Archeology Day 2012. Archeologist Jay Sturdevant, of the Midwest Archeological Center, will speak at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 20. This event will take place at the Homestead Education Center at Homestead NM of America near Beatrice, and be simulcast at Knife River Indian Villages NHS in Stanton, ND.

Homestead NM of America commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862 and its influence across the United States. Impacts of the Act are apparent at Knife River Indian Villages NHS, in an area where people have always had a special connection to the land. Today, that park preserves archeological sites and other landscape features that help researchers understand changes in human landscape use and settlement over time. Historic, archeological, and remote sensing information all tell the story of how different people have used the land, from Hidatsa villagers, to homesteaders, to the National Park Service today.  

Homestead National Monument of America is located four miles west of Beatrice, Nebraska. The monument's hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Friday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends.  For additional information, please call 402-223-3514 or visit https://www.nps.gov/home/index.htm .
