WHO: Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park, speakers, performers, and the general public.
WHY: This event is in recognition of 2024 as “Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights” proclaimed by Governor Wes Moore, marking the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park is planning a commemoration that corresponds with Governor Moore’s proclamation along with the annual Harriet Tubman Emancipation Day and International Underground Railroad Month. The African American Civil Rights Network Program, a program associated with the National Park Service Park History Office, is a co-sponsor of the event.
This event will provide attendees with a series of ranger led programs, live performances, and activities centered around the pivotal moments and courageous individuals who influenced the end of slavery and the advent of civil rights in America.
The event will be in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, Maryland Park Service, The National Council for the Traditional Arts, National Parks Conservation Association, Chesapeake Conservancy, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Educational Center, Dorchester County Historical Society, Caroline County Office of Tourism, and Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
