About the Park

Harriet Tubman National Historical Park is located in Auburn, New York, and encompasses the areas where Harriet Tubman, lived, worked, and worshipped as a free woman from 1859 until her death in 1913.
Harriet Tubman was guided by a deep faith and devotion to family, freedom, and community. After emancipating herself and members of her family, she moved them from Ontario, Canada to Fleming and Auburn, New York. Central New York was a center for progressive thought, abolition, and women’s suffrage where Tubman fought for human rights and dignity following the Civil War.

The park consists of two distinct sites in Auburn:

• The Thompson Memorial African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church and parsonage at 47 Parker Street in Auburn, where Harriet Tubman often worshipped. These two buildings are the primary park properties, although they are currently undergoing restoration and are closed to the public.
• The land and buildings at 180 South Street in Auburn. This property, which includes the Harriet Tubman Residence and outbuildings, as well as the Harriet Tubman Home for Aged and Indigent Negroes, is within the legislative boundary of the park, but is operated independently by the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc.

Upon the completion of the Parker Street site, the parsonage building will serve as a visitor center, while the church will serve as a multipurpose interpretive space.

Our Mission

Harriet Tubman National Historical Park was authorized by Public Law 113-291, Section 3036, on December 19, 2014 as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. On January 10, 2017, Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, signed a Decision Memorandum establishing Harriet Tubman NHP as a unit of the national park system.

The stated purpose of the park is as follows:
"...to preserve and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations the historical, cultural, and natural resources associated with the life of Harriet Tubman."
