(September 15, 2009)—Construction on McCullough, Field, Conzelman and East Roads in the Marin Headlands is expected to begin January 2010 and involve temporary road closures and delays over an anticipated two-year period with most work occurring in the summer. Reconstruction of these roads is the first phase of the Marin Headlands and Fort Baker Transportation Infrastructure and Management Plan to improve old roads and trails and improve access and safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Construction will be managed by the Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration in coordination with the National Park Service, Golden Gate National Recreation Area. “While these improvements are much needed, we recognize construction may temporarily inconvenience visitors to the Headlands” said Rich Weideman, Chief of Public Affairs at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. “To that end, we want to ensure tour operators get as accurate and advance notice of closures and delays as possible to be able to plan accordingly. Additional closures and delays will occur during 2011. Gravel surfaces will be encountered on McCullough Road and East Road during construction.Bicycles are not recommended.
