Road reconstruction will improve access for drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, transit

San Francisco, Calif. (September 15, 2009)—Construction on McCullough, Field, Conzelman and East Roads in the Marin Headlands is expected to begin January 2010 and involve temporary road closures and delays over an anticipated two-year period with most work occurring in the summer.

Reconstruction of these roads is the first phase of the Marin Headlands and Fort Baker Transportation Infrastructure and Management Plan to improve old roads and trails and improve access and safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Construction will be managed by the Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration in coordination with the National Park Service, Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

“While these improvements are much needed, we recognize construction may temporarily inconvenience visitors to the Headlands” said Rich Weideman, Chief of Public Affairs  at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. “To that end, we want to ensure tour operators get as accurate and advance notice of closures and delays as possible to be able to plan accordingly. We will be providing regular updates and encourage operators to contact us with questions and suggestions on what information would be most helpful.”

Key anticipated road and parking lot closures and delays include:

  • February 2010 to May 2010 closure of East Road, Monday through Friday.  An alternate route to Fort Baker and Bay Area Discovery Museum via Alexander Avenue and Bunker Road will be provided.
  • May 2010 to October 2010 closure of Conzelman Road from McCullough Road to Field Road, including Hawk Hill and Upper Fisherman’s parking lots.
  • May 2010 to October 2010 alternating one-lane traffic on East Road and McCullough Road.
  • Periodic one-way alternating traffic Monday through Friday on Danes Drive at Baker-Barry Tunnel.

Additional closures and delays will occur during 2011.

Gravel surfaces will be encountered on McCullough Road and East Road during construction.Bicycles are not recommended.

The construction schedule is subject to change.More details will be announced closer to the start of construction and regular updates will be provided throughout construction and posted on a dedicated Web site expected to launch by November 1, 2009.
