Visiting Glacier National Park this time of year provides the self-reliant visitor a chance to experience the park in one of its quieter seasons. Changeable weather and road conditions requires a flexible schedule and a bit of a spirit of adventure.
Park Roads
The Going-to-the-Sun Road is open from West Glacier to Avalanche Creek, weather permitting, through mid-December. In mid-December the vehicle closure is moved to Lake McDonald Lodge for the remainder of the winter. Be prepared for inclement weather and snow-covered, icy roads. Check ahead of time to see the most recent road status.
Trails
Trail conditions may be impacted by seasonal weather changes. Expect icy conditions, remain alert for wildlife, and carry bear spray. Read the bear safety information in the Glacier Visitor Guide.
A Day Hiking Guide is available at the Apgar Visitor Center plaza. There are also many trip planning resources available on the hiking page of the park website.
The Going-to-the-Sun Road, beyond the gate closure at Avalanche Creek, is accessible to hikers and bicyclists. Traction devices are recommended.
Camping
- Frontcountry Camping
Loop B of the Apgar Campground is open for first-come, first-served, primitive camping. Beginning November 1 there is no charge for primitive camping. The campground has no running water and no flush toilets. There is a vault toilet available.
- Backcountry Camping
Winter backcountry camping permits are issued electronically by advance reservation only. Call 406-888-7800 and press 5 to leave a call-back number. Calls will be returned within three business days.
Restrooms
The Apgar Visitor Center is closed for the season, but public restrooms are open year-round.
