First Shot of the Civil War Commemoration Event

This event will be a fee-free day. Regular site fees resume on Sunday, April 12. Living historians in period clothing will portray soldiers and civilians to help provide visitors the opportunity to learn about the Civil War. All events will take place at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.

National Park Week: April 2026
National Park Week is an annual presidentially proclaimed celebration to encourage people to discover places, programs, experiences, and stories of the NPS. The first National Park Week occurred in 1991 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NPS. The next National Park Week was held in 1994 and it has been an annual event ever since.

Park Talks
Park rangers will present talks on a variety of topics. These talks will take place at the Wando Library in Mt. Pleasant, 1400 Carolina Park Blvd.

February 21st at 11:00 a.m. The Rise of William Moultrie
As we draw closer to the 250th anniversary of American independence, come learn about the definitive actions of Colonel William Moultrie and his valiant efforts to save Charleston from British occupation in the early years of the American Revolution.
March 7 at 11:00 a.m.The Siege of Charleston 1780
Join us for an informative talk on the 1780 Siege of Charleston, a decisive British victory that resulted in the largest American surrender of the Revolutionary War. Learn how this event gave the British control over the South's most vital port and altered the course of the war in the southern colonies.
Additional talks will take place over the course of year, please check back for additional talks added to the schedule.
National Public Lands Day: September 2026
National Public Lands Day is organized annually and led by the National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service and other federal agencies. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to help restore and preserve public lands of all types and sizes—from iconic national parks and rivers to local urban green spaces and everything in between. National Public Lands Day is special because it provides all lovers of the environment—old and new—an opportunity to show our appreciation for these unique places
We will be taking on a volunteer project that will help beautify and preserve the fort and its grounds (details TBD). For more information about the event and to register your interest to participate, please email us!
