Ranger Guided

All guided tours must be scheduled in advance.

Information about scheduling a guided tour on the Plan a Field Trip page.

Ranger guided tours typically last 45 minutes to 1 hour long. Rangers will take students through the museum's two jails, courtroom, and other exhibits. Rangers will engage students using various interpretive and educational techniques that will enhance their learning experience during their field trip to the park. Topics such as Indian Removal, Federal Indian Policy, Arkansas and Oklahoma state history, military history, Deputy US Marshals, and the Justice System will be discussed during standard building tours.

Rangers and docents at the park typically guide students through a standard building tour that covers a variety of topics within Fort Smith's history. Depending on ranger availability, more specific programs may be available if a teacher is wanting to meet specific curriculum standards on a topic. More educational programs offered (for 4th grade and above) at Fort Smith National Historic Site include:

  • Trail of Tears Program
  • Civil War in Arkansas
  • Fort Smith Military History
