A Lakeside Mystery
In the late 1980s, researchers began using the Global Positioning System and created a grid of GPS benchmarks across Yellowstone. The data reveals that the floor of the Yellowstone caldera is in nearly constant movement—uplift and subsidence occur at various places over different periods of time. Some researchers say that the Yellowstone caldera seems to be slowly breathing in and out.
