Monitoring YNP's Heartbeat

Two techniques, GPS (Global Positioning System) and InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), are complimentary technologies that monitor changes in Yellowstone by measuring ground movement from space. InSAR gives a wide-area view by comparing two satellite images that pass over the same area within a year-long period, while GPS provides a detailed time series for specific localities.

A multi-colored InSAR map shows changes in terrain eleveation over time.
