Predicting Geysers
RIVERSIDE GEYSER
This isolated spring is one of the most regular geysers in Yellowstone.
Its 75 foot (23 m) eruption lasts about half an hour and is followed
by an interval between 5.5 to 7 hours. Eruptions usually occur half
an hour before or after the current average interval.
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours before a Riverside eruption, water
begins to overflow from the geyser’s main lower vent into
the river. About an hour later, water will begin to churn out of
the geyser’s smaller upper vent and the activity continues
to escalate. Finally splashes from the upper vent are large enough
to spill into the river and an eruption begins.
