EARTHQUAKE SWARMS
It is not unusual for there to be between 1 and 20 earthquakes
in Yellowstone every day. However, sometimes the quakes occur in
swarms, meaning there are many quakes that take place during a brief
span of time within the same area.
In April 2004, 400 earthquakes were recorded over a 3 day period!
Scientists think these swarms may be caused by shifts in the underlying
magma or by movement of hot water and gases beneath the ground.
