How to Apply

Want to be a park ranger? Applying for jobs with the National Park Service and the rest of the federal government is a little different from applying for jobs in the private sector. Park jobs are only announced on the USAJOBS website, and a good application is often many pages long. Applications undergo a review process, and only the best qualified applicant resumés are forwarded to hiring officials at the park level. Here are a few tips for landing your dream park job:

• Follow all the "How to Apply" instructions listed under each job announcement.
• Review the "How to create an application" steps on USAJOBS.
• Be sure to include all required documentation for the job you are applying for, such as university transcripts or driver's license materials.
• Be on the lookout for jobs early. Seasonal summer jobs are typically announced from November through February. Once a job announcement is closed, you can no longer apply.
• Apply as soon as possible. Many opportunities close after a certain number of applications are received, which may be long before the closing date on the job announcement.
• When creating your resumé, by sure to include experience that is relevant to the job opportunity and highlights all of the job requirements. This often means your resumé will be multiple pages long.
• Include the specific dates you worked. Be sure to list the amount of time you worked - for example, part-time or full-time - and the number of hours.

Employment Information

As an employer of the U.S. Government, the National Park Service provides excellent federal benefits for permanent employees. Benefits are limited for temporary employees. Employee salaries are based on General Schedule (GS) and Federal Wage System (FWS) ratings. The GS is the basic classification and compensation system for white-collar occupations and the FWS is the basic classification and compensation system for trades and labor occupations in the Federal government. The GS salary schedule is Nationwide, however, the FWS wage rate schedules vary with area.
