The Second World War, from 1939 to 1945, was a global war that was the deadliest military conflict in history. An estimated 70-85 million people around the world died in a war that spanned from the Pacific Ocean to the West Siberian Plain. Among the millions of Americans who served, Dwight D. Eisenhower's military career was defined by World War II. A relatively unknown brigadier general at the start of the United States' involvement, by war's end, Eisenhower had distinguished himself as an unparalleled commander of Allied forces and had achieved the rank of General of the Army, known commonly as a five star general.
