A Pine Siskin takes shelter inside the bird feeder while a Shrike waits outside
Shrike Attack

The struggle of life and death played out at the visitor center bird feeder moments ago. A northern shrike dove in for attack on a pine siskin. The siskin quickly dug its way through the seed and crawled into the feeder. Meanwhile the shrike, too big to enter, terrorized it from the outside, and occasionally flew to the branch above waiting for it to come out. Who won this epic battle?

Eventually the shrike gave up and flew away. Park rangers were then able to help free the siskin from the feeder.
