Birders, assemble and register your team of 2-4 birding buddies by 4:30 p.m., Friday, June 5; then bird your socks off within the City of Rocks bird checklist boundary, between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 5-6. The team documenting the most bird species will win the coveted 2020 Best Birders of the “City” award during the evening tally and awards ceremony. Competition Rules:
1. Have fun! This event seeks to foster an understanding and appreciation of birds and the importance of the habitat protected within City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park.
2. This is a team competition. Teams consist of 2-4 persons. Team members may not be separated from each other for more than 15 minutes in a 60-minute period while actively birding. (non-birding hours: camping, eating)
3. Teams must start no earlier than 7:00 p.m. on Friday June 5 and must stop at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, June 6. Teams are required to check in and report current tally at noon at the visitor center.
4. Adhere to the American Birding Association Code of Birding Ethics.
5. Birds not on the park checklist should be documented (with photo if possible); record location.
6. Birds only within the Checklist Area may be counted.
7. Confidence of sightings must be 100% to be counted.
8. Birding competitions are based on honesty and integrity.
9. Know and respect private property; do not trespass.
10. Adhere to all park rules.
11. Teams must submit tally at 7:00 p.m., June 6, on forms provided (meet at the Visitor Center).
