Harkers Island, NC - The National Park Service will reopen the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and points south including the jetty and the spit area at dawn on September 1, 2011. These areas will be open for day use and foot traffic only.No vehicles or overnight stays will be allowed. South Core Banks north of the lighthouse remains closed. Lighthouse: Open Thursday thru Saturday for climbs on a first come first serve basis. Tickets are available at the Light Station Visitor Center. Cape Village: Closed areas flagged and posted as hazardous. Restrooms: Are open Potable Drinking Water:Not available except for sale at visitor center. Dock:The lighthouse dock is open. Hazards:Identified hazards have been flagged and posted.Please wear beach shoes to protect your feet from unseen hazards. Watch for hurricane debris. Natural Resources: Sensitive areas are flagged and posted for protection. Harkers Island Visitor Center is open. Shackleford Banks reopened yesterday for day and overnight use. All other areas of Cape Lookout National Seashore north of the lighthouse remain closed. Since the passing of Hurricane Irene, teams of National Park Service employees have been assessing the damage.They are determining what areas of the seashore can be safely reopened without jeopardizing visitor safety or causing damage to resources.
