Reduce the Impact of Social Media

Social media can have tangible impacts on wild places—for good or bad. Consider sharing your content in a way that helps preserve your public lands.

  • Encourage positive behavior. You can support the mission of the National Park Service by posting or sharing content about conservation, Leave No Trace, and safety.
  • Share locations thoughtfully. Geotagging off-trail locations leads to an increase in unofficial trails and damage to plants and habitat. It also reduces the opportunity for others to discover things on their own.
  • Be mindful of what your images portray. Please do not post or share content that promotes illegal or harmful activities, such as walking on hoodoos, carving graffiti, making rock sculptures in the park, using artifical lighting to illuminate park features, or feeding wildlife. If park staff sees those kinds of posts you may receive a citation in the mail. Be sure to read the park rules and regulations before you arrive.
  • Do you have a permit for that? Commercial services are carefully regulated in national parks. Commercial media creators, product ambassadors, influencers, and other marketers should check out our Commercial Filming & Photography page for more information.

Social Media Commenting Policy

We use social media in accordance with the Department of the Interior social media policy (PDF) and digital media guidelines. The following comment policy is enforced on all our platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Flickr):

  • We do not allow graphic, obscene, explicit, or racist comments or submissions, nor do we allow comments that are abusive, hateful, or intended to defame anyone or any organization.
  • We do not allow solicitations or advertisements. This includes promotion, endorsement, or attempts to defame or defraud any financial, commercial, or non-governmental agency.
  • We do not allow comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity.
  • You participate at your own risk, taking personal responsibility for your comments, your username, and any information provided.
