Big Thicket doesn't have any campgrounds. Instead, you're welcome to camp in much of the preserve's backcountry with a free permit.

Reservations

Reservations are NOT needed to visit Big Thicket National Preserve.

Some ranger-led activities may require reservations, such as nature walks and canoe trips. Check our event calendar for more information.

Permits

Backcountry Camping

Backcountry camping permits are available for free at the visitor center. Get your permit when you arrive in the park or up to 14 days in advance.

Hunting and Trapping

Hunters can get a permit for hunting and/or hog trapping at the visitor center. A valid Texas hunting license is required.

Special Use Permits

Conducting business or hosting an event in the preserve requires a special use permit.

Scientific Research Permits

Permits are required for conducting research in the preserve.
