Feral Hog TrappingBig Thicket National Preserve issues free permits for the public to trap feral hogs in the preserve. A permit allows trappers to set 2 hog traps per year within designated areas in the preserve. Get Your PermitTrappers can pick up a free permit at the visitor center during trapping season, beginning on the first Monday of February. Permits are issued first-come, first-served, and include numbered tags to place on your hog traps. Availability is limited to 74 permits in 2024.
Pick Your Trapping UnitBeginning in 2024, hog trappers can place 2 traps anywhere in their chosen unit. The numbered lot system used in previous years is no longer in use.

Furbearer TrappingBig Thicket National Preserve issues free trapping permits for furbearing animals for several units of the preserve. Permits are issued first-come, first-served through the preserve Resource Management office. Trappers must have a valid Texas hunting license in order to get a permit. Trapping licenses are not accepted.
