The first half of June has been filled with volunteer support at the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Volunteers have been busy, working on hiking, mountain biking and horse trails in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Volunteer activities over the past few weeks included volunteers helping park staff work on improving the Zenith area of the park building a day use picnic area and repairing a stream crossing. A group of American Hiking Society Vacation Volunteers from across the country spent a week working on the Twin Arches Trail, building waterbars, repairing tread, and removing vegetation. A group from Habitat for Humanity based out of Illinois worked for a week assisting the park by pressure washing many of the administrative buildings. During National Trails Day (June 6), the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club and the Big South Fork Mountain Bike Club had over 60 members work on removing debris on mountain bike trails that had been impacted during the February ice storm.

Volunteers are a critical part of the National Park Service and their service is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteerin Parks (VIP) at Big South Fork, please contact Effie Houston at (423) 569-2404, extension 228, or by email at e-mail us.
