Ancestral Pueblo peoples made Bandelier their home from about 1100 to 1550 CE. For more than 400 years they and their descendants lived and flourished here.

Today, Bandelier National Monument preserves a high density and variety of archeological resources from the Ancestral Pueblo period, including cavates carved into cliffs of volcanic tuff. Bandelier is one of the few places in the world where these types of resources are found.
