1. Come Prepared for Summer Conditions

Summer is beautiful but challenging in the Dry Tortugas. Be prepared for sun, heat, thunderstorms and mosquitoes. Stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, carry insect repellent and seek shelter when a thunderstorm quickly moves in.

3. Know Where You Can Go

Some parts of the park are closed seasonally or year-round to protect natural resources. Check ahead of time to learn what will be open during your visit, as well as boating limits if arriving by private vessel.

4. Know your Species & Regulations for Fishing

Familiarize yourself with Monroe County Fishing Regulations before coming to the park. Rangers are available to help clarify park regulations and provide guidance on where you can and cannot fish. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the license holder to know and follow the rules.

5. Plan Far in Advance for Camping

Camping reservations through the Yankee Freedom ferry are booked 8-12 months in advance. All campsites on the Dry Tortugas are first-come, first-served with the exception of the large group site for 10-20 people. Bring your own food, water, shelter and supplies, pack out all of your trash and practice “Leave No Trace” principals.

6. Private Boaters need to Register

All private vessels are required to check in and fill out the Free boater registration form at Garden Key Dock House. Entrance fees ($15 per-person, good for 7 days), are also paid at this location into the Iron Ranger.

7. Take a Guided Tour or Participate in an Evening Program

The Yankee Freedom offers daily guided tours at 11 a.m., starting at the official Dry Tortugas National Park sign. Rangers will post evening programs and specialty tours inside the visitor center. Monthly evening programs will also be announced on the park’s social media accounts.
