Travel Blog: Channel Islands National Park
Channel Islands National Park is home to five beautiful islands, isolated from the busy world of the mainland. These islands harbor unique and endangered wildlife, such as the island fox, harbor seals, and bald eagles. Diverse habitats exist on these nearby islands and are able to thrive due to lack of outside disturbance. The Channel Islands offer a unique chance to connect with nature in a place that seems so distant from the cities that it is just a few hours away from. Each island offers their own unique habitats and views. You can choose to spend the day hiking to the higher peaks of some mountains to look out across the vast ocean or spend your time along the shore tide-pooling. If you're feeling more adventurous you can kayak around the island or even snorkel through kelp beds which feature a myriad of aquatic species.
Transportation
To get to the Channel Islands, click here to book your public boat transit ahead of time. Once you decide which of the islands to explore you can meet in Ventura for take-off. Boat availability depends on weather conditions, so summer is a great time to go. If you're lucky, you’ll get to see some wildlife on the ride, as dolphins are often seen swimming alongside the boat!
Native Species
While visiting the islands, keep your eye out for some interesting native species. The island spotted skunk, island deer mouse, and island fox are fan favorites and can only be found on these islands.

Santa Cruz Island
While there are many islands to choose from, the Santa Cruz Island is a great choice if it is your first time going to Channel Islands National Park. It is only an hour-long boat ride and is the largest island, offering access to easy trails and plenty more to explore. Here you can also take a boat tour through the Painted Cave, one of the largest sea caves in the world that offers a truly otherworldly experience.
