How much time should I plan for my visit?

You can visit four public sites at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and day of the week! We suggest you plan on one full day to visit all four: Mound City Group, Hopeton Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group and Seip Earthworks.

Start at the only Visitor Center for Hopewell Culture NHP, the Mound City Group, 9am – 4pm every day of the week.

Time Needed:

  • 30-minutes: watch the interpretive film and explore the Visitor Center.
  • 30 – 45 minutes: walk through the Mound City Group earthwork and the nature trail. Total of 1 mile.
Next, drive to the other three public sites: Hopeton Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group and Seip Earthworks.

Below are the driving times and mileage from the Mound City Group Visitor Center, and the time needed for an average visit at each.
Hopeton Earthworks
9-minute drive, 7 miles from Mound City Group
45 minutes to walk the 1.7-mile earthwork overlook trail

Additionally, we recommend at least two full days to visit all seven public sites of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks World Heritage Site. Newark Earthworks, consisting of Great Circle Earthworks and Octagon Earthworks, and Fort Ancient are managed by the Ohio History Connection. Visit their respective websites for operation hours and visitor information.
