Conducting research for this project has really opened my eyes about the urgency of protecting threatened and endangered salmonids in the Columbia River Basin. I’m very thankful to my supervisor, Dan Wiley, for guiding me through the research process while still leaving room for independence and creativity.” — Carolyn Subramanium

The inaugural Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Integrated Resources Stewardship virtual internship program has been a roaring success. Not only was the work produced by our interns exceptional, but their experiences, both individually and collaboratively, will impact their careers for years to come.

Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail was recognized as a leader within the National Park Service for our efforts at setting up virtual peer groups both internal to the Lewis and Clark Trail and with other parks across the country. Through these peer groups, monthly discussions were set up to explore topics ranging from how we as an agency can improve our outreach efforts to the ongoing legacy of Lewis and Clark and its place in communities along the Lewis and Clark Trail to this day.

A total of 19 interns worked during the 2021-2022 year, committing to 10 hours per week for 36 weeks. Eight of them extended their internships through the summer. For the year, a total of 7,380 hours were worked covering all aspects of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Integrated Resources Stewardship team. Some projects were completed, such as the French translation of historic documents and the story map Dams and Salmon. Stay tuned for developments on ongoing projects like LewisandClark.Travel and GIS mapping.
