The National Park Service will improve human safety and restore park lands by stabilizing 160 historic coke ovens in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

Why? By stabilizing historic coke ovens, the project ensures the conservation of cultural and historical landmarks. Mitigating the safety hazards surrounding the coke ovens in the park, such as unstable structures, contributes to ensuring the safety of visitors. Restoration efforts including invasive plant control and replanting with native species, contribute to the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity within the park.

What else? The project also includes invasive plant control and restoration of native plants at each site.
