Notes: A secular priest, he was the son of Joseph Díaz del Carpio, military captain of Janos from Gamarra Mayor, Alava, Spain. Joseph Manuel served as military chaplain at Tubac. He was not a brother of Juan Bautista de Anza's wife as reported by Bishop Tamarón and quoted in Mission of Sorrows, by John Kessell. He was a brother-in-law, because his brother, Ignacio, was married to Anza's sister, María Gertrudis.
