The following are upcoming special events hosted by Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
November 11, 2024- Veterans Day Event
On Monday, November 11, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will commemorate Veterans Day with a series of special programs. Join us as we honor all those who have served in the armed forces. All programs are free, open to the public, and begin outside of the Visitor Center. The program schedule is as follows:
9:30 AM-United States Colored Troops at Appomattox
More than 180,000 African American soldiers served in the ranks of the Federal Army, they were known as United States Colored Troops (USCT). Seven USCT regiments, totaling more than 5,000 soldiers, participated in the Battle of Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Learn more about the lives of these veterans before, during, and following the war.
11:00 AM- Veterans of Appomattox Court House
From the Civil War to World War I, discover the ways in which veterans have contributed to preserving the memory of the events which transpired at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
1:00 PM- Family Activity- Stacking of Arms. Despite the different perspectives, convictions, and causes of the Federal and Confederate soldiers who participated in the Stacking of Arms on April 12, 1865. Their common experiences of loss, suffering, and combat provided a shared bond with their comrades and the veterans of the opposing side. Participants in this program will learn how to drill and stack arms with toy wooden rifles, after which they will reenact the Stacking of Arms on the same ground where it occurred in 1865. This interactive, family-friendly program is open to anyone from the ages of 7 to 97.

April 8-13, 2025- 160th Commemoration of Surrender and Freedom Day
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will commemorate the 160th anniversary of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant and Freedom Day (April 9) with special anniversary programs and activities from April 8-13, 2025. Learn More.
