The following are upcoming special events hosted by Appomattox Court House National Historical Park:
August 29-30, 2026
Celebrate National Park Week at Appomattox Court House NHP on the weekend of August 29-30, 2026, by taking part in family-friendly programs!
Join the park on Saturday, August 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to celebrate Play Music on the Porch Day! Everyone is welcome to listen and/or play songs on the Clover Hill Tavern porch. Bring your own acoustic instrument if you’d like to join in. All skill levels are welcome. Enjoy this international day of music at the place where local resident Joel Sweeney helped popularize the banjo after learning about the gourd-bodied, stringed “banjar” instrument from enslaved people in the area.
Then, celebrate National Junior Ranger Day on Sunday, August 30, by stepping into the “School of the Soldier” at 10:30 a.m. Families can take part in this interactive program exploring the daily life of Civil War soldiers. Participants can try their hand at basic military drill and join a recreation of the April 12, 1865, stacking of arms ceremony.
Ranger programs or living history programs are also offered every hour from 9:50 a.m. through 2:50 p.m. throughout the weekend.
September 5, 2026 – Play a Game of Civil War Base Ball
Step up to the plate for a day of ‘base ball’ (spelled with two words in the 1860s) at your local National Park on Saturday, September 5, 2026. All visitors are welcome to physically join in playing a game of ‘base ball’ following Civil War era rules. Games will be held, weather permitting, at 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There is no need to bring a mitt, as they were not used, but the Park will provide period correct bats and balls. Wear appropriate clothing and camp chairs are encouraged.
