The First National Monument in Texas
13,000 years ago, Alibates Flint Quarries was used by mammoth hunters as a place to find the best stone for making tools. Centuries passed, climates and people groups changed, but the colorful Alibates never lost their value or usefulness. The quarry pits at Alibates reveal a clue to the past that these interesting pits were dug by hand, possibly using bone tools.
High on a mesa at Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, there is a thick layer of human-generated flakes of multi-colored Alibates Fint. After your visit, you will gain an understanding of how important this site was to the survival, commerce, and culture of people living on the High Plains many millions of years ago. |
