If you could live anywhere, where would you choose? If could be anyone, who would you be?

As a place, Scotty’s Castle, is larger than life. It represents making the impossible possible, especially in the context of a remote and harsh desert environment. Yet, Scotty’s Castle is also a place of intrigue and mystery, mostly surrounding its infamous characters.

Although he was the namesake of the castle, Death Valley Scotty was not the owner, nor the builder of the castle, but a mere storyteller who boasted of his non-existent wealth and wild west adventures. Truly, it was a married couple who were the masterminds behind the infamous house. The Johnson’s found refuge and peace in the desert and were allowed to live the quiet existence they always wanted. Here, we further explore these unique individuals and their larger significance to not only the castle, but to the larger Death Valley story.
