Basic Information

 

Welcome to the African American Civil War Memorial, a unit of National Mall and Memorial Parks. The memorial is situated in the historic U Street neighborhood of Washington, D.C. a focal point of African American history and culture.

The African American Civil War Memorial is the only national memorial to honor the contributions of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and sailors during the Civil War. Inscribed on the Wall of Honor are the names of more than 185,000 black soldiers and sailors and 7,000 white officers who bravely fought the forces tearing the union apart. The centerpiece of the memorial is the Spirit of Freedom statue, a bronze statue depicting three infantrymen and a sailor defending freedom.
