NPS Mobile App for Wrangell-St. Elias

Let a park ranger be your guide!

The National Park Service App is the official app for all 420+ national parks. The app was created by National Park Service staff—people who know national parks—to help you make the most of your visit. Unlike other apps, the NPS Mobile App takes authoritative information from park rangers, including interactive maps, saved data for offline use when in a remote area with no internet service, accessibility, self-guided tours, things to do, where to stay, shareable digital postcards, passport stamp locations, points of interest and operating hours and seasons. Download the official NPS mobile app before your next visit or take a virtual tour of the park.

Audio Description accessibility

The NPS App includes audio descriptions designed to assist blind and low vision visitors in navigating and experiencing exhibit spaces at the park. The content has been paired with bluetooth proximity triggers that automatically update and provide description for what's nearby as you walk through exhibits. This app is designed to be used with the screenreader voiceover (apple devices) or talkback (android devices) on your smart phone.

Following these instructions on your smartphone for the audio descriptions:

  1. Download the free NPS app.
  2. Search for Wrangell-St Elias.
  3. The app can be saved on your phone or device for offline use when in remote areas without internet service.
  4. Scroll down through the menu options and click on Amenities.
  5. From the amenities menu, choose Accessibility.
  6. Choose the location of the exhibits in the park.
  7. Scroll down to Audio Description. (In settings on the smart phone, turn on the screenreader voiceover (apple devices) or talkback (android devices) to hear the exhibit descriptions read aloud by your phone).
  8. Indoor Exhibits of the Kennecott Store/Warehouse, Manager's Office and North Sacking Shed are currently available with beacons that trigger when the visitor is near the exhibit. The exhibits at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, Exhibit Hall, Ahtna Cultural Center, Slana Ranger Station and Chitina Ranger Station have audio descriptions, but beacons are not needed at those sites.
