CHEYENNE, Oklahoma: Bring the family and join a Park Ranger at Minnie Slief Memorial Library for free storytelling & a craft. For the month of June, kids will learn about wind with “Iva Dunnit and the Big Wind” by Carol Purdy, a tall tale about a homesteading mama and her six children as they use their strength and wits to survive a big windstorm.
The accompanying activity is to make chicken windsocks. Long ago and even today, wind is a major part of life on the plains. Homesteaders moving west harnessed the wind by using windmills to survive on the Southern Plains. The never-ending Oklahoma wind is still harnessed today with modern wind turbines. Future Reading Ranger Events will be held on the second Tuesday (Cheyenne) and the second Saturday (Sayre) of the month.
Cannot make the Reading Ranger in person? Check on our park Facebook page for a Virtual Wind Reading Ranger Program.
