NPS / P. Winfrey The monument for the 4th West Virginia Infantry is located on Union Avenue south of Graveyard Road. The monument serves as the base for Major Arza M. Goodspeed’s bust. Also, markers designating the trenchline are located on the south side of Graveyard Road 500' from the Stockade Redan; the assaults of 19 May 1863 located 150' east of Confederate Avenue approaching Park Tour Stop #10; the assaults of 22 May 1863 located on the ridge on the south side of Graveyard Road 500' from the Stockade Redan; and the camp site located at the bottom of a wooded ravine east of the West Virginia markers on the ridge on the south side of Graveyard Road 500' from the Stockade Redan. This unit was attached to Brigadier General Hugh Ewing’s 3d Brigade of Major General Francis P. Blair's 2d Division, Major Generals William T. Sherman and Frederick Steel’s XV Army Corps, and was commanded by Colonel James H. Dayton. Major Arza M. Goodspeed was killed during the assault on 19 May 1863 [refer to pages 396 - 398, Volume 5 of the WPA Monumentation Survey Books]. Bottom of Bronze Bust is inscribed:
