This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Abraham Buford's 2d Brigade of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and commanded by Col. John Snodgrass. At the beginning of the Vicksburg Campaign, the brigade, less the 54th and 55th Alabama, was at Port Hudson, LA. The 55th Alabama was retained by Loring at Meridian, MS, as a mobile reserve. When Buford's brigade was reorganized and ordered to Tullahoma, TN, on or about 15 April 1863, and then recalled on 18 April 1863, both regiments were re-attached to the brigade and participated in the Battle of Champion Hill on 16 May 1863. On 19 May 1863, the division arrived at Jackson, MS, and was attached to Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West.
