Monument is located at the intersection of Union Avenue and Old Jackson Road in front of the Shirley House. Also a marker designating the assault of 22 May 1863 located on Old Jackson Road, west of the loop at Park Tour Stop #3 and a marker designating a sharpshooter's line on Old Jackson Road 100' past Park Tour Stop #3. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen'ls John E. Smith & Mortimer D. Leggett's(assumed command 3 June 1863) 1st Brigade of Maj. Gen. John A. Logan's 3rd Division, Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson's XVII Army Corps and was commanded by Col. Jasper A. Maltby and Maj. Luther H. Cowan. The regiment lost 2 officers & 14 enlisted men WIA, and 1 enlisted man MIA at Raymond, MS 12 May 1863; 4 enlisted men KIA, 1 officer & 19 enlisted men WIA at Champion Hill, MS 16 May 1863; 1 officer (Maj. Luther C. Cowan) KIA, 19 enlisted men WIA and 2 enlisted men MIA in the assault at Vicksburg, MS 22 May 1863. [Refer to pages 155 & 156, Volume IV of the WPA Monumentation Survey Books.]
