From 15 April to 8 May 1863, this unit was headquartered at Canton, MS, and attached to Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman's 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. Commanded by Col. G. W. Abert, a detachment was mounted in accordance with Pemberton's orders. At the Battle of Jackson. MS (14 May 1863), the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. States Rights Gist's Brigade, Col. Peyton H. Colquitt commanding, of Brig. Gen. John Gregg's Defense Force, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Departments of Tennessee and Mississippi, and commanded by Col. Washington L. Doss. During the siege of Vicksburg, it was attached to Col. Arthur E. Reynold's and Brig. Gen. John Adams' (assumed command 8 June 1863) 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West.
